Winlink
The system is also known as Winlink Global Radio Email, which encompasses its broader functionality as a worldwide radio messaging system that facilitates email communication over amateur radio frequencies. This system is particularly valuable for emergency communications, allowing users to send and receive messages even when traditional communication infrastructures are unavailable.
Winlink operates through a network of amateur radio and authorized government-licensed stations, enabling worldwide email communication without the need for internet access. The system is designed for reliability in emergencies, making it essential for organizations like the Red Cross and FEMA. It allows for the transmission of critical information and official ICS forms during natural disasters or infrastructure failures.
Winlink supports various radio modes (e.g., Pactor, VARA, ARDOP) and can bridge different radio capabilities, ensuring effective communication across diverse platforms. Users can send emails with attachments and utilize features such as position reporting through the Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS).
Winlink Express is the primary client software used to access the Winlink network. It is compatible with various operating systems and offers features like auto-logging, form generation, and message compression.
STL Metro ARES sends out a Winlink message with a check in option each week for learning and practice. If you would like to receive the weekly Winlink check in message send an email request to [email protected] with "//WL2K" in the subject line.
