Gary Hoffman, KB0H, the Net Manager, presided
over the monthly St. Louis County
ARES® meeting held on
August 16, 2004.
Gary mentioned that St. Louis County ARES®
participation in a CUSEC earthquake drill held on July 25, 2004. (CUSEC =
Central United States Earthquake Consortium)
Gary turned over the meeting to guest speaker Roland Kramer, W0RL. Roland
explained the purpose of formal traffic and described the NTS (National
Traffic System) message handling system.
After Roland's presentation, John Weis, N0UFB, District C Official
Emergency Station, critiqued the group's performance during the
earthquake drill. Most notably, very few
ARES® members identified themselves
as such.
John also read a memo from the ARRL (American Radio Relay League)
concerning the terms "ARES" and "Amateur Radio Emergency Service". Both
are registered as trademarks.
John reminded everyone that the MS-150 Bike Tour was approaching and
that volunteers were still needed.
