Creve Coeur House 1 * Present at the Location * Bob Gale, WA4GDX * Roy Tribble, K0TRB * Ed Dewhirst, KD0LNT * Battalion Chief George had received a Journal Entry for the exercise as follows: "St. Louis County Amateur Radio Emergency Services Group will be at House One to set up for a drill.  They will be in the Safety Room off of the lobby from 1000 until 1700 Give them any assistance they need."  The Safety Room would have required blocking two doors open to run coax out the front door of the fire house.  He was more than happy to accomodate us in the Fire House Operations area.  All went well with the use of the Fire House. * Set up of radios went well.  All antennas were ground mounted, see attached photos, one with radials on the ground and the other on a trash can lid.  Worked well for repeaters but a push up pole could have been velcroed to the pipe ballards and gicen us some height for simplex operation. * We had two radios set up along with three portables.  I discovered when we were asked to QSY to a different repeater that we need to either hold a class or request that our members learn to enter not only the repeater frequency but the PL tone into their VFO.  Too many people rely on preprogramming repeaters into their memories and have difficulties manually entering the information into the VFO.  It also appears that some do not understand how PL tones work. * During simplex test at the end, it would have been better to conduct it one location at a time with locations switching back to the net control on the repeater in between tests I have some other ideas that I will bring to the November Planning Committee meeting.   Bob Gale, WA4GDX AEC St. Louis County ARES
